Canada–EU relationship takes centre stage
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed developing a new “associate member” relationship between Canada and the EU. Carney welcomed the idea of closer cooperation, particularly in trade, critical minerals, defence, artificial intelligence, energy and technology. The proposal would require further negotiations and approval by EU member states.

Trump threatens possible tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump said the proposed Canada–EU arrangement could be considered a “hostile act” if it moved in a direction he opposed, and threatened potentially serious tariffs or restrictions on trade with Europe. The EU is preparing to disburse €3.3 billion to Ukraine for the procurement of missiles and drones, according to Commission President von der Leyen.
