B C mass shooting

Today we pause to reflect on the mass shooting that took place in British Columbia and the impact it has had on families, survivors, and the wider community.

Moments like this are a painful reminder of how violence can ripple far beyond a single location, touching friends, neighbors, and strangers alike. Our thoughts are with those who are grieving, those who are healing, and the first responders who stepped in to help.

In times like this, what matters most is coming together — checking in on one another, supporting local victims’ services, and honoring the resilience of communities that refuse to be defined by tragedy.

If you’re struggling to process this news, it’s okay to take a break, talk to someone you trust, or seek support. We are stronger when we care for each other. 🕊️

Another Shooting

Tragic Shooting Rocks Coastal North Carolina

Southport, N.C. — A horrific mass shooting occurred late Saturday night at a popular waterfront restaurant, leaving three people dead and several more wounded.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., gunfire erupted at the American Fish Company in Southport. The suspect reportedly opened fire from a small boat on the Intracoastal Waterway, targeting patrons gathered at the dockside restaurant.

Law enforcement says the attack was “highly premeditated”, suggesting the location and timing were specifically chosen.  The suspect, Nigel Edge, 40, was arrested by the U.S. Coast Guard about 30 minutes later as he attempted to flee via boat. He now faces multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder and several counts of attempted first‐degree murder.

Investigators report that at least eight people were hit by gunfire, though the exact number of injured continues to be refined. Some victims were visiting from out of town.  At least one is in critical condition.

Authorities confirm the weapon used was a short-barreled AR-style rifle, equipped with a suppressor. 5 Edge reportedly identifies as a veteran and has claimed to suffer from PTSD; he had prior interactions with local law enforcement and has filed lawsuits against the Oak Island police department.

Community Response & Next Steps

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Southport and Brunswick County communities. Local officials, law enforcement, and state investigators are collaborating to piece together the motive and gather evidence. Meanwhile, residents are demanding answers and renewed attention to gun violence prevention.

A court appearance for Edge is scheduled shortly, with prosecutors pushing for him to be held without bond. At this time, no additional suspects are believed to be involved.

Another senseless shooting

And what happens next? Crickets. No national reckoning. No serious gun-law reform. Just calls for “thoughts and prayers,” more security, and political spin. Meanwhile the cycle starts again.

How is it that America still clings to the illusion that it’s “the greatest country in the world”? How is it that mass shootings—even at a federal facility—don’t force a fundamental conversation about weapon access, accountability, or societal priorities?

We keep telling ourselves: “We treasure freedom,” “We’re free to live as we choose,” “We’re exceptional.” But how free are we when we fear going to work, the grocery store, or even a government office? How exceptional is a nation where the cost of “freedom” is constant trauma and grief?

Yes, there are many good, compassionate Americans who yearn for change. But the loudest voices in politics are often the least courageous. They issue press releases, demand security reviews, shift blame — but never touch the core issue: unchecked firearms in a society that’s already struggling with inequality, mental health, institutional violence, and systemic brokenness.

It’s tragic — but it’s predictable. And until enough people stop pretending that this is normal, until we stop normalizing mass murder, nothing will fundamentally change.
