Beginner Piano Lesson #12

Beginner Piano Lesson #12

Playing with Expression (Dynamics)

By now, you’ve likely practiced notes, rhythm, hand coordination, and simple songs. Lesson #12 focuses on dynamics—the art of playing softly and loudly to make music come alive.

What Are Dynamics?

Dynamics tell you how loud or soft to play.

Common dynamic markings:

  • pp = very soft (pianissimo)
  • p = soft (piano)
  • mp = moderately soft
  • mf = moderately loud
  • f = loud (forte)
  • ff = very loud (fortissimo)

Exercise 1: Dynamic Scale

Play a C Major scale:

  1. Start very softly (p)
  2. Gradually get louder as you go up the scale
  3. Reach f on the top C
  4. Get softer coming back down

Listen carefully to the change in volume.

Exercise 2: Five-Finger Pattern

Right Hand:

  • C – D – E – F – G – F – E – D – C

Play it:

  • Once softly (p)
  • Once loudly (f)
  • Once starting soft and ending loud (crescendo)

New Musical Terms

  • Crescendo (<) = gradually louder
  • Diminuendo (>) = gradually softer

Simple Practice Piece

Play:

C C G G | A A G |
F F E E | D D C |

(Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

Try:

  1. First line softly.
  2. Second line louder.
  3. End softly.

Technique Tip

Keep your fingers curved and relaxed. Dynamics come from controlled arm and hand weight—not from striking the keys harshly.

Practice Assignment

Spend 10–15 minutes:

  • C Major scale with dynamics
  • Five-finger pattern in both hands
  • “Twinkle, Twinkle” using soft and loud sections
  • Practice one favorite song and add crescendos and diminuendos

Piano Thought

“Notes tell us what to play. Dynamics tell us how to feel.” 🎹🌹
