Frankenstein Day — August 30

Frankenstein Day — August 30 ⚡🧟

Every year on August 30, Frankenstein Day celebrates the life and imagination of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The date is Shelley’s birthday—she was born on August 30, 1797.

A Monster That Changed Literature

Published in 1818, Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a living being and then struggles with the consequences of his experiment.

More than 200 years later, the story remains a landmark of Gothic literature and an important influence on science fiction, horror, film and popular culture.

⚡ Frankenstein Facts

  • Mary Shelley began developing the story when she was still a teenager.
  • The novel was first published in 1818.
  • Frankenstein is the name of Victor Frankenstein, the scientist—not the creature.
  • In Shelley’s original novel, the creature is never given a personal name.
  • The story continues to inspire movies, television, books, theatre and Halloween traditions.

How to Celebrate

📖 Read or revisit Mary Shelley’s classic novel.
🎬 Watch one of the many Frankenstein film adaptations.
🎃 Put a little Frankenstein fun into your Halloween preparations.
💡 Think about the story’s deeper questions about science, responsibility, loneliness and what it means to be human.

Frankenstein Day reminds us that some of the most frightening stories are also the ones that make us think.

Happy Frankenstein Day! ⚡

Cruise Ships Arriving in Atlantic Canada

Cruise Ships Arriving in Atlantic Canada — Wednesday, September 30, 2026

Atlantic Canada is heading into another busy fall cruise day on Wednesday, September 30, with ships scheduled in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Schedules can change because of weather, sea conditions and operational requirements, so travellers and local residents should check with the ports for last-minute updates.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Saint John is expecting two cruise ships on Wednesday.

Seven Seas Splendor — Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Arrival: approximately 7:00 a.m.
Departure: 4:00 p.m.

Norwegian Jewel — Norwegian Cruise Line
Arrival: 8:00 a.m.
Departure: 4:00 p.m.

That will put two ships on the Saint John waterfront during much of the day, bringing thousands of passengers and crew into the city. The Saint John community calendar confirms both September 30 calls and directs visitors to Port Saint John for the cruise schedule.

Port Saint John Cruise Schedule

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Two vessels are currently scheduled for Halifax.

SH Vega — Swan Hellenic
Arrival: 8:00 a.m.
Departure: 2:00 p.m.
Passenger capacity listed by the port: 152
Pier 23

Celebrity Silhouette — Celebrity Cruises
Arrival: 10:30 a.m.
Departure: 6:00 p.m.
Passenger capacity listed by the port: 2,886
Pier 22

The Port of Halifax schedule was last updated September 26 and notes that cruise schedules remain subject to change.

Port of Halifax Cruise Schedule

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown is also expecting two ships.

Zuiderdam — Holland America Line
Arrival: 7:00 a.m.
Departure: 5:00 p.m.
Passenger capacity: 1,964

Le Bellot — Ponant
Arrival: 9:00 a.m.

Port Charlottetown currently lists Zuiderdam as On Time, while Le Bellot is marked Time Change, making it particularly important to check the port schedule before heading to the waterfront.

Port Charlottetown Cruise Schedule

Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador

MS Vista — Oceania Cruises
Arrival: 10:30 a.m.
Departure: 6:30 p.m.
Passenger capacity: 1,218
Crew capacity: 800

The Port of Corner Brook lists Vista as berthing at the port on September 30.

Port of Corner Brook Cruise Schedule

Other Newfoundland and Labrador Calls

The broader Newfoundland and Labrador cruise schedule lists additional activity for September 30, including expedition and smaller cruise vessels.

Ocean Albatros — St. John’s
Scheduled time: 7:00 a.m.

Seabourn Venture — St. John’s
Scheduled time: 9:30 a.m.

Seabourn Ovation — Twillingate
Scheduled time: 2:00 p.m.

Star Pride — Indian Harbour
Scheduled time: 1:00 p.m.

The provincial cruise schedule also lists L’Austral at Saint-Pierre, although Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is a French territory rather than part of Atlantic Canada.

One point worth watching: the City of St. John’s schedule lists Seabourn Ovation as arriving in St. John’s on September 30 for an overnight call into October 1, while the broader Cruise Newfoundland and Labrador schedule lists the ship at Twillingate on September 30. Because these sources conflict, Seabourn Ovation’s September 30 destination should be considered subject to confirmation.

A Busy Wednesday on the Atlantic Coast

From the Bay of Fundy to Newfoundland, September 30 will bring a mix of large cruise ships, luxury vessels and expedition ships to Atlantic Canadian communities.

Saint John will have the Seven Seas Splendor and Norwegian Jewel, Halifax welcomes SH Vega and Celebrity Silhouette, Charlottetown has Zuiderdam and Le Bellot, and Corner Brook welcomes MS Vista. Several additional expedition calls are scheduled around Newfoundland and Labrador.

For waterfront businesses, restaurants, attractions and tour operators, it should be another active day in what is traditionally one of the busiest periods of Atlantic Canada’s fall cruise season.

Please note: Cruise schedules can change with little notice because of weather, sea conditions and operational decisions. Check the individual port’s official schedule before travelling specifically to see a ship.

New Brunswick Announces First Seniors’Week

New Brunswick Announces First Seniors’ Week

September 27 – October 3, 2026

The Government of New Brunswick has launched the province’s first Seniors’ Week, creating a new annual opportunity to recognize the contributions of seniors throughout the province.

The week, running from September 27 to October 3, celebrates the experience, knowledge and contributions of older New Brunswickers and highlights the important role seniors play in families and communities.

Recognizing New Brunswick’s Seniors

Seniors Minister Lyne Chantal Boudreau said the initiative is intended to recognize seniors and encourage active aging and continued involvement in communities.

The province is encouraging New Brunswickers to take time during Seniors’ Week to recognize the seniors in their lives and acknowledge the many ways they contribute to their families, neighbourhoods and communities.

The week also includes National Seniors Day on October 1.

Supporting Seniors Across New Brunswick

The Seniors’ Week announcement comes as the province continues to invest in seniors’ services and long-term care.

Recent provincial announcements include new long-term-care beds in Neguac and Riverview, as New Brunswick works to expand access to care for seniors.

The province has also outlined a broader seniors and long-term-care plan involving investments in long-term care, support for caregivers and measures intended to help seniors remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

More Than a Week

For many New Brunswick families, Seniors’ Week is an opportunity to say thank you to parents, grandparents, neighbours, volunteers and friends who have helped build the communities we live in today.

It is also an opportunity to recognize that seniors are not simply part of New Brunswick’s history. They continue to contribute to the province every day through volunteer work, community organizations, family life, business, education and many other activities.

National Seniors Day — October 1, 2026

Seniors’ Week is a reminder that recognizing the contributions of older New Brunswickers should extend beyond one week each year.
