September has arrived, and the sports calendar is about to get very busy.

Toronto has suddenly made the American League Wild Card race very interesting. After defeating Kansas City 4–3 on September 5, the Jays moved to 72–71 and tied Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card position. Toronto has also won four straight games.

That makes every September game important.

The Blue Jays have spent much of the season trying to stay in the playoff picture, but their recent surge has given Canadian fans something to get excited about.

The MLB postseason begins September 29, with the World Series scheduled to begin October 23.

The current standings show Montreal leading the East at 10–2, with Toronto at 5–6 and Hamilton at 4–8. Edmonton leads the West at 8–3, followed by Saskatchewan at 7–4.

With the Grey Cup approaching, teams are beginning to separate themselves from the pack.

The CFL season is scheduled to conclude in October before the playoffs lead to the Grey Cup in Calgary on November 15.

For Atlantic Canada, the CFL remains an important part of the fall sports tradition, even though the region does not currently have its own CFL franchise.

That means the wait for hockey is almost over.

Canadian teams will receive plenty of attention, including the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks.

And there is an interesting storyline involving Toronto.

The Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, while the New York Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer was the first overall selection in 2025. The two young stars could face each other when Toronto and New York meet September 30.
