Beginner Piano Lesson #23

Beginner Piano Lesson #23

Playing with Expression: Dynamics and Feeling

By Lesson 23, you’ve likely learned basic notes, simple chords, and reading music. Now it’s time to make your playing sound more musical.

Today’s Focus: Dynamics

Dynamics are the volume changes in music.

Common symbols:

  • p (piano) = soft
  • mp (mezzo-piano) = moderately soft
  • mf (mezzo-forte) = moderately loud
  • f (forte) = loud
  • < (crescendo) = gradually get louder
  • > (diminuendo) = gradually get softer

Exercise 1: Five-Finger Scale

Place your right hand on C-D-E-F-G.

Play:

C – D – E – F – G – F – E – D – C

  1. Play softly (p).
  2. Play loudly (f).
  3. Start soft and gradually get louder to G.
  4. Start loud and gradually get softer back to C.

Exercise 2: Chord Practice

Play these chords slowly:

  • C Major (C-E-G)
  • F Major (F-A-C)
  • G Major (G-B-D)
  • C Major (C-E-G)

Try each chord:

  • Softly
  • Loudly
  • With a smooth crescendo

Simple Song Exercise

Play:

C C G G
A A G

F F E E
D D C

(This is the opening of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.)

Play it once normally, then:

  • First phrase soft
  • Second phrase louder
  • End softly

Practice Tip

A pianist doesn’t just play the correct notes—they tell a story. Even simple songs become beautiful when you vary the volume and expression.

Weekly Challenge

Play a familiar tune and use at least:

  • One crescendo
  • One diminuendo
  • One soft section
  • One loud section

Goal: Make the music sound expressive, not mechanical.

🎹 Happy practicing! Lesson #24 will introduce simple left-hand accompaniment patterns to make your songs sound fuller

What the historical observations show

Weather reports from Saint John Airport indicate several periods of rain and mist early in the month, a transition to light snow around November 11–14, mixed rain and snow around November 17, and more rain and fog near November 26–27. Light rain was also reported on November 30.

Weather Spark

For a genuinely complete historical report for BevNice.ca, the remaining items to verify against official records are:

  • Actual daily maximum and minimum temperatures.

  • Measured rainfall and snowfall totals.

  • Wind speeds, peak gusts and prevailing directions.

  • Monthly precipitation and snowfall totals.

  • Official weather warnings and significant storms.

The best authoritative starting point is Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Historical Climate Data. I would use those records to validate the figures before publishing the calendar as official historical weather.

Gardening in Saint John, in November

Gardening in Saint John, New Brunswick in November

By November, Saint John has usually experienced its first frost, which typically arrives in October. The gardening season shifts from growing to preparing for winter and next spring.

What You Can Still Do in November

Plant Garlic

November is an excellent time to plant garlic cloves. They will establish roots before winter and emerge early next spring.

Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs

If the ground isn’t frozen, you can still plant:

  • Tulips
  • Daffodils
  • Crocuses
  • Hyacinths

These bulbs need winter chilling to bloom in spring.

Mulch Perennials

Apply 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) of mulch around:

  • Hostas
  • Daylilies
  • Peonies
  • Roses

Mulch helps protect roots from freeze-thaw cycles.

Clean Up Garden Beds

Remove:

  • Dead annuals
  • Diseased plant material
  • Weeds

Leave some leaf litter and seed heads for birds and beneficial insects.

November Harvests

You may still harvest hardy crops such as:

  • Kale
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Parsnips
  • Carrots (if mulched)
  • Leeks

Many of these actually improve in flavor after light frosts.

Protect Plants for Winter

  • Wrap young trees against rodent damage.
  • Add compost to empty beds.
  • Move tender container plants indoors.
  • Drain hoses and rain barrels before freezing temperatures arrive.

Saint John Gardening Tip

The Bay of Fundy gives Saint John one of the longest growing seasons in New Brunswick, but by November soil temperatures are dropping quickly. Focus on garlic, bulbs, mulching, cleanup, and winter protection rather than new vegetable planting.

Best November projects for Saint John gardeners:

  1. Plant garlic.
  2. Plant spring bulbs.
  3. Mulch perennial beds.
  4. Protect roses and shrubs.
  5. Add compost and prepare next year’s garden plan.
