🇨🇦 Trade & tariffs — REGIONAL
Ottawa has unveiled a $7.5-billion package of tariff countermeasures and business supports as Canada–U.S. trade tensions continue. Atlantic premiers are also renewing calls for consumers to buy Canadian.
🏭 New Brunswick — Defence investment
A proposed NATO explosives manufacturing facility near Belledune could represent an investment of up to $2 billion and significantly expand Canada’s explosives-production capacity. Phase-one construction is targeted for late 2027.
New Brunswick is also reviewing its long-standing natural-gas development moratorium, with the provincial review expected to take about five months.
🌲 Nova Scotia — Northern Pulp site
Nova Scotia has issued an order authorizing the demolition of buildings at the former Northern Pulp mill site in Pictou County. The province says the work is being supported by proceeds from the sale of former provincial timberlands.
🥔 P.E.I. — Potato exports
The United States is tightening requirements for P.E.I. potato imports, with new labelling and waste-management conditions scheduled to take effect October 5. The changes follow concerns related to potato wart.
⚡ P.E.I.–New Brunswick power link
Ottawa has committed $5.9 million toward engineering and planning for an expanded electricity connection between P.E.I. and New Brunswick. The proposal includes two new submarine cables and transmission upgrades.
🌊 Newfoundland & Labrador — Energy
The province is establishing Team Labrador to pursue economic benefits from the Churchill River energy-development agreement, including the proposed Gull Island project. Major Labrador energy projects are expected to attract substantial investment and create jobs.
🚔 Public safety — Newfoundland
A 29-year-old man is facing an impaired-driving charge after a single-vehicle rollover on Topsail Road near Commonwealth Avenue late Sunday. Police say he was believed to be impaired by drugs and remains in hospital. The investigation continues.
🐟 Atlantic seafood
Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood sector remains a major economic contributor: the combined value of its wild fishery and aquaculture industries reached $2.11 billion in 2025.
