Beginner Piano Lesson #13

Introducing the G7 Chord and Simple Chord Changes

Welcome to Lesson 13! Today you’ll learn the G7 chord, an important chord that creates tension and naturally wants to resolve back to C major.

1. Review

Practice these chords first:

  • C Major: C – E – G
  • F Major: F – A – C
  • G Major: G – B – D

Play each chord slowly 5 times.

2. Learn the G7 Chord

Notes:

G – B – D – F

For beginners, you can play the easier version:

G – B – F

Listen to how it sounds a little “unfinished.” That’s because it wants to return to C major.

3. Chord Exercise

Play:

Measure Chord
1 C
2 F
3 G7
4 C

Repeat 10 times with a steady beat.

4. Right-Hand Melody

Play these notes slowly:

C – D – E – F | G – F – E – D | C

Try holding the chord in the left hand while playing the melody in the right.

5. Song Pattern

Many songs use this progression:

C – F – G7 – C

Practice changing between the chords smoothly without stopping.

6. Rhythm Practice

Count:

1 – 2 – 3 – 4

Play each chord once per measure.

Weekly Challenge

Play:

C | F | G7 | C

while counting aloud and keeping a steady tempo.

Music Tip

The G7 chord is one of the most important chords in music. Learning how it resolves to C major will help you play hundreds of songs in the future.

Practice Time: 10–15 minutes per day. 🎹
