Art Comeau: A Saint John Hockey Community Hero
When people talk about hockey heroes, they often mention NHL stars, Stanley Cup champions and Olympic medalists.
But in Saint John, New Brunswick, there is another kind of hockey hero worth remembering: **Art Comeau**.
For more than three decades, Comeau devoted himself to making hockey available to children in the Saint John area, particularly youngsters who might otherwise have had difficulty participating in the sport.
## A Lifetime of Community Hockey
Art Comeau became widely known for his work coordinating the **Saint John school hockey program**.
By 2004, he had been coordinating school hockey for approximately **34 years**. The program gave hundreds of local children the opportunity to play hockey through teams organized at elementary and junior-high schools.
More than **400 Saint John youth** were participating through eight junior-high and 28 elementary-school teams when Comeau received national recognition.
His philosophy was about more than simply producing hockey players. Comeau believed hockey could help children develop confidence, discipline, teamwork and friendships.
## 🏆 National Recognition
In February 2004, Hockey Canada and RBC Financial Group named Art Comeau the **national winner of the first RBC Local Hockey Leaders program**.
He was selected from 13 regional winners across Canada.
As the national winner, Comeau received a **$25,000 donation from RBC for a local hockey cause**, in addition to the $5,000 he had already received as the New Brunswick regional winner.
The award recognized people working behind the scenes who dedicated their time to grassroots hockey and making the sport accessible to their communities.
Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson praised volunteers such as Comeau, saying their dedication helped keep hockey strong across Canada.
## 🏒 His Connection to the Hockey Hall of Fame
There is an interesting distinction concerning Art Comeau and the **Hockey Hall of Fame**.
Comeau was **not inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player or builder**.
Instead, the 2004 RBC Local Hockey Leaders winners—including Comeau—were **recognized in the Hockey Hall of Fame** as part of the program.
The initiative was launched by Hockey Canada, RBC Financial Group, the Hockey Hall of Fame and hockey commentator Ron MacLean to recognize ordinary Canadians making an extraordinary contribution to grassroots hockey.
That recognition was significant because it placed a spotlight on the people who rarely receive headlines but who keep community hockey alive.
## 👦 Giving Children a Chance to Play
Perhaps the most important part of Comeau’s story is the number of young people who benefited from his work.
His school hockey program opened the door for children who may not have had the opportunity to play organized hockey otherwise.
A 2004 Hockey Canada report also highlighted Comeau’s involvement in bringing local children together with Hockey Canada through a skills camp at Lord Beaverbrook Rink.
Nearly 100 children from the Saint John school hockey program participated in that Christmas-season event, receiving hockey instruction as well as Team Canada equipment and other gifts.
## A Different Kind of Hockey Legacy
Art Comeau’s story reminds us that hockey history isn’t only about statistics.
It is also about the volunteers who organize teams, find ice time, encourage children, arrange equipment and make sure that a youngster gets the chance to step onto the ice.
For decades, Comeau helped make that happen in Saint John.
His national recognition in 2004 was a fitting tribute to a man who devoted much of his life to **children, community and hockey**.
