🇨🇦 TOP STORY: Canada–U.S. Tariff Deadline
Canada and the United States are in last-minute negotiations as a U.S. threat to impose 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods approaches Wednesday’s deadline.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to remain in contact as officials try to prevent another escalation in the trading relationship. The proposed measures would affect a range of Canadian products, while wider negotiations continue over the future of the North American trade relationship.
Canadian officials are under pressure to protect exporters and jobs while avoiding additional costs for businesses and consumers. The coming hours could be critical for both countries.
🏛️ POLITICS
Trade is dominating Ottawa today, with the tariff deadline overshadowing most other political issues.
In New Brunswick, the provincial legislature is currently out of session. The Legislative Assembly calendar shows no scheduled sittings during August, with the next sitting period beginning in October.
That means provincial political attention is focused more heavily on government announcements, infrastructure, health care, economic development and summer issues.
🍁 NEW BRUNSWICK
New Brunswick continues to see a busy summer tourism and community-events season.
A major regional fisheries consultation is scheduled for Saint John on August 20, part of federal efforts concerning protections and modernization for independent harvesters and coastal communities.
Across the province, infrastructure and government procurement remain active, including new projects and tenders being issued in August.
⚓ SAINT JOHN
Saint John is busy with summer activities and visitors.
The Holland America Volendam called at the Port of Saint John on August 17, while the city continues to host summer festivals and events.
Today’s local calendar includes the Fundy Fringe Festival, a Mandala Rock Painting Workshop at Market Square, and Music in the Park with Sorcha’s Gunn.
The Founders Cup national lacrosse championship is also taking place at TD Station, putting another major sporting event in the city spotlight.
🌦️ WEATHER
Saint John Forecast
Saint John starts Tuesday under cloudy skies with humid conditions and periods of rain or drizzle. The temperature is expected to reach about 24°C, with more mixed weather continuing through the week.
For people heading downtown, to the waterfront or to evening events, an umbrella or light rain jacket would be a good idea.
🚔 CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY
Police and public-safety concerns continue across Atlantic Canada, with copper theft remaining a regional concern highlighted by recent reporting in the Maritimes.
Nationally, the RCMP has also been involved in the return of a 2,000-year-old Peruvian artifact from Montreal to Peru, an international law-enforcement effort involving cultural property.
Local residents should continue to report suspicious activity and thefts to police and avoid confronting suspects themselves.
⚾ SPORTS
Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays begin a three-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at 6:40 p.m. ET. Toronto is looking to build momentum after its weekend series against the Yankees.
The Jays will face Tampa Bay again Wednesday night before Thursday’s afternoon finale.
🥍 Saint John Lacrosse
The Founders Cup 2026 national lacrosse championship is underway at TD Station in Saint John, bringing teams and fans from across Canada to the city.
🏀 Toronto Tempo
The Toronto Tempo host the Indiana Fever tonight at Scotiabank Arena at 7:00 p.m., adding another major Canadian sports event to Tuesday’s schedule.
