Both China and India can play in the FIFA World Cup. They are not banned. The reason they usually do not appear in the tournament is that they have not successfully qualified.
The FIFA World Cup requires teams to earn a place through regional qualifying competitions.
- China has qualified for the men’s World Cup once, in 2002, hosted by South Korea and Japan.
- India has never played in a men’s World Cup finals tournament. India did qualify for the 1950 World Cup, but the team did not participate.
Some reasons both countries have struggled to qualify include:
- Football is not the dominant sport in those countries (especially compared with cricket in India).
- Strong competition from other Asian nations.
- Long-term challenges in player development, coaching, and professional leagues.
The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams beginning with the 2026 tournament gives Asian teams more qualification spots, which improves the chances that China, India, and other developing football nations could qualify in the future.
