  • 1965 Voting Rights Act Becomes Law in the United States

    President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act, which prohibited any discrimination in voting. The act enforces the 14th and 15th amendments to the US Constitution.

  • 1962 Jamaican Independence

    The Caribbean island country was first colonized by the Spanish in the early 16th century. In 1655, the British invaded Spanish Jamaica and made it a colony after the Spanish surrendered. Jamaica soon became one of the most profitable colonies of the British Empire, especially after sugarcane was brought to the island by the English. The Jamaica Independence Act of July 1962, which was a result of anti-colonial sentiments that were spreading throughout the globe, gave Jamaica full independence by leaving the Federation of the West Indies.

    In the first of the only two times nuclear weapons have been used in warfare, the United States dropped a nuclear bomb, nicknamed Little Boy on the industrial city of Hiroshima in Japan. Over 150,000 people were estimated killed by the resulting explosion. Japan had joined the Second World War in December 1941 on the side of the Axis powers. After the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings 3 days later on August 9, Japan surrendered to the Allies and ended the Pacific War.

The human remains discovered on Thursday, August 1, 2024, have been positively identified as those of Allan Lee, a 52-year-old resident of Saint John. Lee’s body was found in a wooded area off King William Road in West Saint John.

Extensive Search and Investigation
On Friday, August 2, 2024, detectives conducted an exhaustive search of the wooded area where the body was located. The search involved multiple resources, including police canine units, grid searches, and aerial drone surveillance.

As a result of an autopsy performed on Saturday, August 3, 2024, detectives believe that Lee’s death occurred as a result of a homicide. Detectives continue to conduct searches, canvasses, and interviews. Evidence obtained in relation to the investigation is being examined by members of the Forensic Identification Unit.

Appeal for Information
The Major Crime Unit continues to investigate. Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone in the area of King William Road that has video footage or surveillance of the incident at the time it occurred.

The Saint John Police are investigating a suspicious death after locating human remains in a wooded area off the King William Road in West Saint John.

It is reported that:

On Thursday, August 1, 2024, at approximately 7:08 p.m., police responded to a report of human remains located in a wooded area off the King William Road.

Upon arrival, police located human remains that have been identified as a 52-year-old Saint John man. The identity of the deceased is not being released to the public at this time.

The Major Crime Unit, Forensic Services, and Coroner were called to investigate. An autopsy has been scheduled for Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video footage that captures King William Road.
