  • 1969 A police raid of a gay tavern sparks a series of violent clashes

    The Stonewall Riots in New York City marked the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States. The Christopher Street Day, a yearly observance for Gay Pride in some European countries, is named after the bar’s location.

  • 1967 Israel annexes East Jerusalem

    From Israel’s point of view, the annexation effected the reunification of its capital city. However, the international community declared it illegal and views East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory occupied by Israel.

  • 1939 The world’s first scheduled transatlantic flight takes off

    The Boeing 314 Clipper flying boat was operated by Pan Am. It took about 24 hours to reach Marseille, France. The scheduled service was soon discontinued again because of the outbreak of World War II.

  • 1914 Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are assassinated

    Gavrilo Princip’s attack effected a crisis among Europe’s major powers (July Crisis). This ultimately triggered the First World War, which with over 37 million deaths was one of the bloodiest war of all time. Five years later to the day, the Treaty of Versailles formally ended the war.

  • 1846 The saxophone is patented

    Belgian musician Adolphe Sax developed the woodwind instrument typically made of brass, which in recent decades has heavily influenced the sound of the jazz, military band, rock, and pop musical genres.

2024 Canada Day celebration in Saint John

The City of Saint John is pleased to announce an exciting lineup of free, family-friendly activities in celebration of Canada Day on July 1, and residents and visitors are invited to join the festivities.

The City is partnering with AREA 506 to host the third annual Canada Day Waterfront Festival. The Waterfront Festival will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Container Village at 85 Water Street. Festival activities include face painting, circus school, buskers, arts and crafts, prizes and much more.

To top off the celebrations, a fireworks display over Lower Cove will begin at 10:00 p.m., weather permitting.

Gates to the container village open at 11:00 a.m. and activities begin at 12:00 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to gather near the main stage at 1:00 p.m. for official remarks and the opening ceremony.

    The competition was held on a circuit around Le Mans, France and organized by the Automobile Club de France (ACF). Renault’s Ferenc Szisz won the competition.

The Saint John Police have arrested a 44-year-old man following a commercial break and enter.

It is reported that:

On Sunday, June 23, 2024, at approximately 3:12 a.m., police responded to an alarm call at a business in the 1200-block of Sandy Point Road.

It was alleged that the alarm was triggered by an individual who was inside the location and did not have the proper code to deactivate the alarm.

Police arrived on scene and entered the business. A male was located inside and taken into custody without incident.

There were no damages reported in relation to the building and, due to a quick response and apprehension of the suspect there was nothing reported stolen.

The accused was later released from custody on an undertaking with conditions including to appear in court on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
