1814Treaty of Ghent Signed

  • The Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812 between Britain (and its Canadian colonies) and the United States, was signed on December 24, 1814. This treaty restored pre-war borders and marked the beginning of peaceful relations between the U.S. and Canada.

1941Hong Kong Falls to Japanese Forces

  • On December 24, 1941, during World War II, Hong Kong fell to Japanese forces after 17 days of intense fighting. Among those defending Hong Kong were nearly 2,000 Canadian troops sent to bolster British forces. The event marked a significant loss for the Allies and resulted in many Canadians becoming prisoners of war.

1980Canada Hosts the North American Blizzard

  • On December 24, 1980, a massive snowstorm swept through southern Ontario and Quebec, disrupting holiday travel and causing widespread power outages.

  • Historically, December 24 has been a day of festive preparation in Canada. Many Canadians of Christian faith celebrate Christmas Eve with religious services, including midnight masses, and family gatherings.

Most stores will be closing early on Christmas Eve

New Brunswickers looking to pick up one last item from the grocery store or pick up a holiday gift only have a few hours left.

Most stores will be closing early on Christmas Eve so employees can have the chance to spend time with their families and friends.

All malls, big-box stores and most grocery stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Some drug stores and smaller grocery stores will be open, although their hours may vary.

NB Liquor and Cannabis NB stores will be closed, but agency liquor outlets may be open.

Banks, post offices and all government offices will also be closed and there will be no mail delivery.

Saint John Transit will end service at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will not be operating on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Christmas Day garbage and compost collection in the city will move to Dec. 28.

If you are unsure if something is open, it is best to call ahead.

SNOWFALL WARNING

SNOWFALL WARNING

Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm, except up to 40 cm over areas of higher terrain. Locations: Saint John and County, Sussex – Kennebecasis Valley and Kings County, and Fundy National Park Time span: Ending tonight. Remarks: Snowfall warnings are issued when greater than 15 cm of snow is expected to occur in 12 hours or less. In some localities snowfall rates briefly as high as 5 cm an hour will cause very poor visibilities and travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.
