Classic Eggnog Recipe

Here’s a classic homemade eggnog recipe that serves about 4-6 people. Feel free to adjust the quantities based on your preference!

Classic Eggnog Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup bourbon or rum (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus more for serving)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Separate the Eggs: In a large mixing bowl, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Place the yolks in one bowl and the whites in another.
  2. Whisk the Yolks: Add the granulated sugar to the bowl with the egg yolks. Whisk together until the mixture is smooth and pale in color.
  3. Combine Milk and Cream: Stir in the whole milk and heavy cream into the yolk mixture. Then, add the bourbon (or rum), vanilla extract, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Mix until well combined.
  4. Beat the Egg Whites: In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the eggnog mixture. This step adds lightness and a creamy texture.
  5. Chill and Serve: Cover and refrigerate the eggnog for at least 2-4 hours to chill. When ready to serve, pour the eggnog into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of ground nutmeg or cinnamon.
  6. Enjoy: Serve chilled as a festive holiday drink!

Tips:

  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the bourbon or rum and use additional milk or cream.
  • You can experiment with other flavors, like adding a splash of almond extract or using flavored rum.

Enjoy your homemade eggnog!
