Origami, which comes from the Japanese words, ori meaning folding, and kami meaning paper, originated in Japan in the 6 century, though for a long period of time the art was preserved for religious ceremonies. By the 17th century, origami had become mainstream in Japanese society and was being used for decorative and ceremonial purposes. In recent years, origami has become popular with origami societies and competitions springing up all around the world.

Made by dipping or rolling sautéed, roasted or caramelized almonds in melted chocolate, chocolate covered almonds were popular among the wealthy in the 18th century. Today, they are a quick snack perfect to take with on a hike, at a picnic or while on the go.

Ancient Nuts

Native to the Middle East and South Asia, almonds have been consumed by humans since ancient times. Archaeological evidence has shown that the almond fruit and nut was buried with Tutankhamun (King Tut) around 1300 BCE.

Today, almonds are grown and used in cuisine all around the world. The United States is the world’s largest producer of the nuts, with the state of California taking the lion share’s of all the almonds exported by the country.

Technically a drupe – a fruit with a fleshy body and hard seed – almonds are rich in Vitamins B and E and many essential minerals.

Best for Baking

Bittersweet chocolate is at least 35% chocolate liquor mixed with a minimal amount of sugar. In many parts of the world, it is also known as dark chocolate or semisweet chocolate. Bittersweet chocolate is used primarily for cooking and baking.

Sandwich Day #2

November 3 is celebrated every year as Sandwich Day.

The ultimate in convenient food and one of the most beloved food around the world, it is no surprise that the humble sandwich has it own day.

The unofficial holiday commemorates the birth anniversary of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Rumor has it that the modern day version of the sandwich came about when Montagu’s servants put some meat between two slices of bread as a way for the Earl to eat his meal while gambling.

What To Do

  • Eat sandwiches for all your meals. Have a bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast, an egg salad sandwich for lunch, a roast beef sandwich for dinner and an ice cream sandwich for desert.
  • Gourmet up your sandwich by adding gourmet ingredients like bacon jam, goat cheese and roasted beets.
  • Make a grilled cheese sandwich instead of just a normal sandwich.
